Uff-duh! Finally got all of my stuff transferred over from Tumblr (what a tedious process, why did I do that?!).

Now, time to stop bugging everyone & to go back to my extremely boring life. If, for some crazy reason you're actually reading these things, don't worry. I'll keep you all filled in ;)

It’s getting to be that time of the year again for (uh-oh) New Year’s Resolutions!
Last year, I had quite the list. Which, unfortunately, I ended up putting off, but for a good reason! I decided to take the trip of a lifetime to volunteer in Tanzania Africa. So I had to prioritize. Which, in the end, was actually very beneficial! Because for this year, I’ve decided I am going to boycott “New Year’s Resolutions”.
For my lifestyle (and poor lifestyle as a college student), I’ve decided it would be best for me to just give up on the whole resolutions thing. In exchange however, to complete my list! I’ve been pretty good at choosing things that are already on my list as my resolutions, but they’re not always plausible for that year. So my new goal will just be to complete at least one thing on my list.
I know, you’re thinking “Oh Chels, you’re taking the easy way out!”, but this really isn’t the case. My list is actually pretty crazy and some things can be expensive! So one thing a year is actually a very obtainable goal! Sometimes I’ll be able to complete 20 things! Others maybe one is all I’ll be able to manage that year. Either way, I’m winning here. I won’t feel like such a failure if I don’t complete my yearly resolutions and I’m allowing myself to focus on my list much more!

Go me! ;)

movie day!

All my kids watching The Lion King (for the first time).
These children have made all the difference in this trip for me. I have absolutely loved everything about this trip, but my class has made the most significant impact on my life. Just being able to spend time with them everyday and getting to know them and their way of life, made me so happy!
Most people would think this would end up being a harrowing experience, but I think it has been much more beneficial than anything for me. It’s true that these children have almost nothing (and that does make me very sad) however, these children also have so much more than most people I know in my life: These kids are so grateful and happy for EVERYTHING that they have. No matter if it’s being able to go to school, a new pair of shoes, or just having a family around. All things we as Americans take for granted every single day of our lives. I am definitely not excluded from this! I turn into an absolute wretch if I don’t eat for a few hours and these children are lucky if they receive one meal a day. It breaks my heart that as a person I’ve grown accustomed to all of the luxuries I have and 90% of the time I completely take them for granted. I am ashamed of the mentality I’ve developed as a middle class American.
I hope if there’s one thing I can take back home from this trip that it is a new-found appreciation of all the things that I do have. Also, that as an adult (I definitely still far from being a real grown-up), this is a virtue that I will possess. This isn’t something that’s going to be easy.. I can hardly contain my excitement of eating a cheeseburger and watching Supernatural.. but I never want to turn into my old bratty, ungrateful, unhappy self.
So, here I go, back off the states. Back to my cell phone service, television, food all day, and instant 24-hour services.. Wish me luck!

Tom's Shoes

I’ve never gotten on the “Tom’s Shoes” bandwagon since I first heard of them. Of course I, being the cynical, doubting person that I am, didn’t believe this cause was actually working.
Once again, my cynical self, was proved wrong. I actually got to see Tom’s shoes in action! A woman from the Red Cross came in to my school one day to get an attendance list and about a week later she came back with BOXES of shoes! All of my children (that were there the first day) got a brand new pair of shoes!
Needless to say, I was a little overwhelmed with joy that I was again proven wrong about something so great! My children were so happy & that really is the best part of my day :)

three: teach in a different country

volunteering in Africa definitely accomplished this one! I admire & love these children so much! It’s going to be so sad to leave them! :(

twenty: go on an African safari

Three weekends ago, the phrase “walking into the lion’s den”, was put into a whole new light for me..

my excitement way back in April! :)

It’s official …
The date for Africa has finally been set and the down payment is in!
Now just to book my flight, fill out my papers, get my immunizations, take my training & language courses, and pay the rest…
Even with all the work I’ll be doing in the next few months to prepare, I honestly don’t think I’ve been more excited for anything in my life! Not only will I be fulfilling my childhood dream of traveling to Africa, but I will also be learning Swahili, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and going on a safari! I think I am the happiest girl in the world!
Now all I need is to find my Humphrey Bogart there ;)

something to keep in mind for the future!

The Ultimate and Ever-Growing List of Travel Resources. This is just the first installment of wonderful resources to help you achieve your travel dreams. I want to travel the world for free, so I’ve been searching and traveling and trying to find the right way to do it.

Last summer, I found another thing to add to my list! Watching an eclipse..

more waterfalls

It’s not really on my “official” list of things to do, but I’ve definitely always wanted to play in waterfall: This year, I feel like I’ve finally accomplished that (a couple of times over!).
It’s such an awesome feeling to me experiencing things like this. It’s something so small & it probably wouldn’t even cross most people’s minds, but to me, it’s just simply amazing.

thirty-one: go to a drive-in theater

This (last) summer my friends decided to build an outdoor movie theatre..
Which turned out awesome! They started out with a screen made from old bedsheets from the dorms that we just sewed together and it was all kept up with some PVC piping! Thanks to super-genius Austin though (and his soon-to-be famous ABI) they made enough money over the summer to upgrade everything; now it’s SUPER awesome!
Not to mention, they found the original 50s intermission video to show between movies and have FM transmitters for cars so you can actually just drive in and watch!
I have to give my friends a big congratulations for building/ having the only operating outdoor theatre in the UP.. in their backyard! Definitely made my summer :)

twenty-eight: cliff jumping

Yesterday (over a year ago now actually), I finally got to check off number 28 on my list of things to do: cliff jumping!
Highlight of the day:
(An awesome display of my great luck!) Slipping and falling off a completely, 100% DRY rock and falling into the fast current! A truly great display of my luck, no injuries: Just a little scare!
Here’s a site with a little more info about the falls. I use this site quite often to check out where falls are around me. It makes finding the hidden ones a lot easier and gives some great info!

Dr. Seuss.. always such good life advice

"I’m glad we had the times together just to laugh and sing a song, seems like we just got started and then before you know it, the times we had together were gone. - Dr. Seuss"

love me some EAP

"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity. - Edgar Allan Poe"

Hungarian Falls

If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing and if nature were not worth knowing, life would not be worth living.
I love living in the U.P.! There are so many fun (and free) things to do with my days off! This is one of the few mini-trips I’ve gone on: it’s only about 10 minutes from my house and a short hike around.
Hungarian Falls!
There are a couple sets of falls which are very easy to access and walk around. The last fall however is on private land and very hard to see during the summer with all the trees. But if you walk to the top of the falls and look over it is an amazing view! I’m hoping to go back in the winter and visit again, next time with a real camera too instead of my cell phone! The Keweenaw Peninsula website has more information and good directions to the falls. The “address” google or most GPSs will give will just take you to the main road towards the falls and not actually to the falls themselves.

Peter Pan

"you know that place between sleep and awake; that place where you can still remember dreaming? that’s where i will always love you. that’s where i will be waiting.
- peter pan"

another thing to add to my list of things to do in Europe

I'm a book nerd..

I read a lot of books.. Therefore, I like to post a lot of quotes.

“He was sure that it made no difference to her on which day he appeared: for her, ever day was the same, and when each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.” — The Alchemist

something I WILL do in Europe!

Where In the World.. Is Chelsea?!

Carmen San Diego is a computer game I used to play in elementary school (90‘s kids I’m sure have heard of it), but a few years ago my mom and I turned it into a real-life game. We had to modify it a bit for our own use, but it’s the same basic idea as the computer game.

Here’s the game:
The game begins at the location of where you’re leaving from, where you interview various witnesses at three different sites. *Our version: you get three clues to each destination.
Each will offer some clue about where she’s heading next: she was buying an Arabic dictionary, she was changing her currency to rupees, she wanted to hunt moose, and so on. *With the new technology we found that picture messages are great for this! Since in the game you have pictures to go with the clues. One example: my mom sent a picture of “ET” on her way to Ohio because Steven Spielberg was born in Ohio.
These clues can be used to deduce the identity of the city to which the perpetrator fled (where we’re going).
Get it right, you’ll get a better clue.
Get it wrong, you’ll get a worse (harder) clue. This should make it harder for the opponent to guess where you’re going! - If they don’t figure it out by the time you reach your destination, tough luck buddy! *We buy souvenirs from the places we’re going! If one person guesses where the other is going, they get a souvenir :) so it’s like if you win, you get the “loot”!

writing my first postcard..

Due to my lack of evolution (and more importantly, lack of funds), I am refusing to update my browser to anything other than Safari & won't buy a new computer. So my Tumblr that I've been using for years, is no longer working properly :(

Thankfully, while I was just recently in Africa, Mama Linda introduced me to blogger! Which seems like it will be a very easy transition since I already have a gmail account (thanks to my damn smartphone)! The hard part however, will be switching everything from my Tumblr!

So, here goes! Wish me luck...
